그리고 선생님께서는 당연히
International age 로 소개를 해주셨다. 그래서 선생님은 32살이었다.
근데 크게 생각안하고, 선생님이 나보다 어리시구나! 그냥 막연하게 생각을 하고 첫 수업부터 쭉 큰 의미를 두지 않고 수업을 진행하고 있었다. 그러다가 얼마전 수업에서 Birth year 에 관해 이야기하고 있었다. 선생님께서는 나에게 "When is your birth year?" 그래서 나는 "My birth year is 1989." 라고 대답했다. 그랬더니 선생님께서 깜짝 놀래셨다. ㅠㅠ
"Oh really? My birth year is 1988."
결론은 선생님이 나보다 나이가 한 살 더 많으셨던 것이었다. 그간 수업에서 선생님은 내가 나이가 더 많다며 나를 부를 때, 내 영어이름을 호칭할 때 존칭의 표현을 나름 사용하셔서 표현하셨는데... 선생님은 얼마다 당황하셨을까?
어쨌든 의도치 않게 선생님을 그간 수업에서 동생으로 생각했던...
내 모습을 반성하며, 아 International age 와 Korean age 의 차이를 경험을 통해 알게 되었다.
그 후 영어를 사용하는 외국인 친구들과 이야기하면서 내 영어 선생님과 있었던 이 이야기를 같이 나누면서 물어보았다.

나이의 구분이 크게 중요하지 않는 이유가 무엇이야? 생일이 지나기 전과 후에 1년 안에 나이가 바뀌는데, 그게 아무렇지도 않은거야?
친구들은 이렇게 말했다.
외국에서는 딱히 나이가 중요하지 않다. 나이 상관없이 어울리고 나이가 많고 적음을 크게 의식하지 않는 문화인 것 같아.
문화가 다르다보니 친구들의 대답이 완전히 이해되지 않았지만
참 신기하다고 생각했다.
그러다가 외국인 친구가 이제 Korean age 를 쓰는 나라, 즉 태어나자마자 1살을 먹고, 해가 지나면서 나이를 먹는, 나이를 세는 나라는 이제 한국밖에 없다는 이야기를 해주었다. 그래서 지금 International age 와 대조되는 개념으로 Korean age 를 쓰고 있다. 다른 아시아권 나라들도 이제는 International age 를 사용한다고 하니 정말 깜짝놀랬다.

What is Korean Age?
Korean age is a way that Koreans calculate their age. It is always one or two years more than your international age. Koreans consider a year in the womb as counting towards their age, so everyone is one year old at birth. Everyone gets one year added to their Korean age onNew Year’s Day.
Here’s an easy way to think about it. Your Korean age will always be at least one year older than your international age. That’s because Korean age adds one year because of the time you spent in the womb before being born (approximately one year).
Why is Korean Age Different?
Korean age is different than international age (or Western age) because of two reasons. First, you are automatically one year old at birth. Second, you age another year because of the turn of the calendar year. Your date of birth doesn’t affect your Korean age.
To contrast, if you are a baby born in the USA, then on the day after you are born, you are considered to be one day old. The nine months that you spent inside your mommy’s tummy are not considered part of your age. Your age increases by one each time your date of birth passes.
In Korea, on the day of your birth, you are considered to be one year old; the time you spent in the womb counts as the first year of your life (despite it only being nine months). Because of this, your Korean age is always at least one year higher than your international age. Then the change of the year on January 1st automatically advances your Korean age by one.
